Entry from: Singapore, Singapore Entry Title: "1AM in Singapore" Entry: "It is 1AM in Singapore... Video camera charging (with my faithful power converter kit) - check Checked email before hostel reception closed - check Emailed the document to San Diego that I finished on the plane to Taipei - check Washing a load of laundry so everyone wakes up to clean clothes - check Treating first blisters - check Kids are wrecked and sleeping - check Laura is wrecked and sleeping - check We are all jet lagged and dead tired. Tried in vain to get everyone to sleep when they had time, but kids insist on getting up to play in the AM here like they are on San Diego time, so by the time evening rolls around they are passed out at the dinner table or on a subway train. We hit the ground running on this adventure. In our first few days we've flown the redeye to Taiwan, explored the city of Taipei, been up at 4am to catch an early flight out of Taipei, had two flight delays, taken one overnight sleeper train, 2 commuter trains, a half dozen subway rides, visited our first Mosque in Malaysia, first Buddhist Temple in Singapore, first Hindu Temple (again Singapore), attended a classical Indian music and dance performance, had two fantastic vegetarian Indian feasts served on banana leaves (one eaten with our hands), had Chinese fried breads and sweet potato, drank from fresh Thai coconuts, and ate Durian ice cream (Durian is the potent fruit that is banned in hotels and subways across Asia because you can smell it two dozen yards away). None of us really know what day it is, but tonight everyone has time to sleep in tomorrow. Let's hope we all go for it. It is 3AM in Singapore... Demian sleeping at the keyboard - check - Demian ______________________________________________________ Here is the program for the amazing Classical Indian Arts program we saw in Singapore last night. The President of Singapore, Sellapan Ramanathan (known as S.R. Nathan) was in attendance at the same performance, and received a ceremonial gift from the Soorya Singapore chapter... "Soorya Global Festival of Indian Dance & Music is an enthralling double bill - a dance performance and a music performance - of some of the most acclaimed classical art forms of India by highly accomplished artists, in one evening. The dance segment features three renowned dancers performing three of the great classical dance styles of India - kuchipudi, mohiniattam and kathak. Kuchipudi is presented by Kalaimamani Uma Muralikrishna, mohiniattam by Methil Devika and kathak by Anjana Jha, coming together for the very first time in this Soorya Global Festival series. Don't miss this rare opportunity to catch a unique synthesis of dance forms from South and North India! In the music segment, enjoy a jugal bandhi (union of two styles) of hindustani and carnatic styles of Northern and Southern India in two of the great classical stringed instruments - veena and sitar. While the veena is the quintessential symbol of South Indian (carnatic) music, the sitar is the celebrated symbol of North Indian (hindustani) music. Maestro Anantha Padmanabhan (veena) and Ustad Rafique Khan (sitar) will be accompanied by Sudha Ranjith on vocals, Anil on mridangam and M. Jayan on tabla. Experience the diverse dance and musical styles of India - live in Singapore"" Read and see more at: http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/dorrance/1/1212302220/tpod.html Photos from this trip: 1.
