Entry from: Vaithīsvarankoil, India Entry Title: "6th Stop - Vaithianatha Swamy Temple" Entry: "Vaitheswaran Temple is not very far from Sirkazhi temple and we arrived here in 5 minutes. The main deities are Vaithianatha Swamy and Thaiyal Nayaki. We went round the whole temple. It was quite big in that sense. The moment you enter the eastern entrance, you would see Murugan Sannidhi. Along the entire temple, there would be people who would just try to swindle money from you, this we were forewarned and true enough, we met many such people in this temple. After praying, we left at 5.35 pm. A short brief of the temple is as follows: Vaitheeswaran means the Lord Doctor in the Tamil language. It is believed that prayers to Lord Vaitheeswaran can cure diseases. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Siva. It is one of the nine Navagraha Temples and the planet Mars (Angaraka) is also worshipped here. Believed to be the site of the curing of Angaraka of leprosy, this site is known for its Naadi Astrologers. One of the Navagraha, Angaraka , was suffering from leprosy and was cured by Lord Vaidhyanatha Swamy. It is one of the Navagraha Temples. Thirunavukkarasar had severe stomach pain, his sister asked him to pray to Lord Vaidhyanatha Swamy to cure the illness. He did the same and his illness was relieved. From that day onwards, he has became a great devotee of Lord Shiva.The Lord Vaidhyanath & Thyalnayaki Ambal are the Kula Theivam (Family Diety) for Kshatriya Community of South India, especially for Vanniyakula Kshatriyas. Lord Vaitheeswaran Swamy and his Consort Thaiyalnayaki Ambal who stands with the medicinal oil to cure the diseases of the devotees. It is believed that Rama, Lakshmana and Saptarishi have worshipped the Lord here.It is believed that the god Rama and his brother Lakshmana cremated the vulture king Jatayu who was killed by Ravana when he tried to prevent the abduction of Sita) at this place. There is a pond at this temple called Jatayu kundam.There is a small shrine to Lord Dhanvantani. Lord Muruga here is known as Muthukumara Swamy. Here, the ashes (Thiruchandu Urundai) is supposed to cure all the diseases. It is prepared from Homa Kundam. Another medicine given is Chandan (sandalwood powder) with Saffron. People come here to offer Milagu (Pepper) and Salt with Jaggery in the Siddhamritam to get rid of diseases. They also donate carved silver plated body organs in the Hundi (vessel for offering) to cure the diseases. It is believed that any disease can be cured."
