Entry from: Carapichaima, Trinidad and Tobago Entry Title: "Hanuman Statue, Temple in the Sea, & Caroni Swamp" Entry: "1) Hanuman (sa:हनुमा न्, IAST:Hanumān; also Anjaneya, Maruti) is one of the most popular concepts of devotees of God (bhakti) (devotion to God) in Hinduism and one of the most important personalities in the Indian epic Ramayana. He is considered by some to be the 11th incarnation (Rudra avatar) of Lord Shiva, and is considered the most powerful and intelligent amongst divine beings. His most famous feat, as described in the Ramayana, was leading an army of monkeys to fight the demon King Ravana. An 85-foot (26 m) Karya Siddhi Hanuman murthi was installed at Carapichaima-Trinidad and Tobago, by Avadhoota Dattapeetham Pontiff Sri Ganapathi Sachchidananda. It is the tallest in the Western hemisphere and second tallest in the world. 2) Temple in the Sea: The temple in the sea is the culmination of the vision of one man. Returning from India during World War Two he had a narrow escape from a German torpedo and vowed to build a temple to thank God for his escape. Siewdass Sadhu repeated sought to erect a temple on sugar cane land and was prevented from doing so. In fact he completed construction of a small temple on land but the estate owners broke it down. Eventually in 1947 he began construction of the temple on land that he reclaimed from the sea, doing the reclamation by personally carrying the rocks by hand. In all Siewdass Sadhu spent 25 years building it in the sea. Unfortunately the effect of sea erosion prevented Sadhu from ever completing the structure and he died in 1971 with the structure incomplete. In 1994, the government created a more permanent artificial island and finished the temple to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Indian Arrival Day. 3) Caroni Swamp: The Caroni Swamp is the largest mangrove wetland in Trinidad and Tobago. It is located on the west coast of Trinidad, south of Port of Spain and northwest of Chaguanas, where the Caroni River meets the Gulf of Paria. The Caroni Swamp is an important tourist attraction and provides important habitat for the Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber), one of the national birds of Trinidad and Tobago."
